US Box Office Estimates June 11-13 2010
After 3 weeks on top, Shrek’s finally kicked off the top spot, with the help of some martial arts and an intercontinental star. The remake of the Karate Kid showed a clean pair of heels with a clear dominance in takings. Heavily-hyped 80’s TV show remake A-Team did less well, hindered in part the lack of the iconic Mr T in even a cameo role.
Aside from that, the films are fairly static from the previous week, although kid-friendly Marmaduke manages to hold itself a bit better in comparison to chick-flick Sex+the City. Unlike last weeks prediction, Iron Man doesn’t quite break the $300Million barrier either. And for those wondering, Robin hood is at number 11, with, yes, you guessed it, Letters to Juliet in 12. Now THERE is a love story, albeit between two films, that could ne’er be separated.
However, following on from last weeks comments on Hollywood dropping the ball, there’s one thing to notice. There are TWO original films in the top10; Killers and Splice. The Karate Kid is a remake, The A-team is adapted from a TV series, as Prince of Persia is from a video game and Maramaduke from a comic strip. Meanwhile Shrek, Greek, Sex and Iron Man are all sequels (although Greek could be considered more of a Spin-off) Is there no originality in Hollywood?
