US Box Office Estimates June 4-6 2010

A low weekend take, as Shrek leads the tables for a third weekend, making 15 of the years 23 weekends dominated by a 3D film (marked with ) – there’s a lesson there for Hollywood, wonder if they can understand it. It’s also a weekend filled with sequels, with 4 in the top 10 (Greek is a sequel of 2008’s Forgetting Sarah Marshall) – possibly why the weekend has been weak, despite four new films in the top 10.

Killers didn’t do great either, despite attempts by Kutcher to bring awareness to the film, and to the stupidity of blaming cams, but enough to take it above the previous week’s big newcomers. Both Prince and Sex dropped significantly, although they’re both on track for a decent haul. Kid dog-comedy Marmaduke didn’t have such luck, although an indifferent film and promotional campaign is probably to blame.

Bringing up the rear is the first big blockbuster of the season, Iron Man, plodding along and on track to hit the 300M target, while Splice slots in behind. Finally, Robin and Juliet complete a fourth straight week paired together – it has been Robin one place ahead of Juliet since the two came out – must be love!

Incidentally, BoxOfficeMojo issued a press release on June 2nd, calling May a bit of a failure, down significantly over previous years. Their analysis?

Key reason: Lame movies marketed lamely. The box office is product-driven, and Hollywood dropped the ball…

I couldn’t agree more. That’s a major reason I started keeping track of box office figures, to quantify things.
